Trauma from the past becomes a part of who you are. It weighs down on the present, suffocating life and preventing you from healing and moving on. If you continue to carry this baggage around long enough, you will eventually become who you are not. Believe in the essential goodness of your true self, however, and you will accept the past, but let go of the burden and finally become the real you. This is the story of one man's struggle to accept the past and move on before it destroys everything he is and could ever hope to be. In desperation Gerry flees society to save his sanity and ends up in the remote villages of East Africa. Midst the poverty, he encounters hope and more love than he could imagine. Will it be enough to save him? Can he repair the damage done to him in his childhood or will his abusers win in the end?

Kill Daddy Get a Life Book 1 eBook Gerald Freeman Reviews
This book was recommended to me by someone who knows I love Joseph Conrad. Wow! “Kill Daddy” was a wild ride and a great read. I loved the character development. Vicariously, I was loose in Africa and half scared most of the time. I am ready for the sequel!
Bring it on!
I love biographies and travel books so I was really excited about reading this book and it certainly didn't disappoint. The story roller-coasters through Gerry's journey in Africa with flashbacks to his childhood - there are 2 stories going on here, the physical trip in Africa and the struggle of coming to terms with an abused past. Every little story is a gripping adventure and the author paints a such a vivid picture of Africa, its landscape, culture and wonderful people, in such a way that you fall in love with the country as the story progresses.
The story rattles along at such a pace that before you know it you are coming to the end and wanting more. I'm already looking forward to the next installment!
I love reading memoirs/life stories and have written a couple of my own. From the time I picked up this (e-book), it was hard to put down. I felt glued to the life of the story. I related to many of the author's childhood experiences and felt encouraged by how he ultimately learned to deal with them. And it ended perfect!!!
This is a great story of a lonely, beaten man who has little will to live until the last journey he plans to make, lands him in the arms of a nation & a people who give him back the will to live, no, thrive!
This story was well written, I felt as though I was walking side by side Gerry! Thank you for sharing your brave travel story with me!
I pray that you have found peace in journey through life! I have a new found appreciation for the small things life we all so often
take for granted.
The author has survived severe abuse. The journey from the demons of the past to healing is raw and honest and the setting of Africa is exotic and lovingly painted. The author quickly engages you.
He is brave in his ability to search for his truth. Courageous in living in the moment.
Seeing Africa and the loving family that accepted him through the Author's eyes is amazing and unique.
I loved this book.
Gerald Freeman has been running from an abusive childhood for most of his adult life. He's finally at a point where he's realized that self-medicating with assorted drugs and pushing away well-meaning friends has gotten him nowhere. It's time for a change. He toys with the idea of killing his father in an attempt to quell his inner demons, but fortunately, he opts for something more meaningful, legal and only slightly less dangerous traveling throughout Africa on a journey of self-discovery.
Gerald Freeman is a master storyteller. I found myself immediately hooked and completely immersed in a story that could only be told by someone who lived through it. I was struck by how much I didn't know about Africa. Mr. Freeman has successfully painted a vivid picture of life in some amazing and exotic, yet overwhelmingly poverty-stricken, places like Uganda and Kenya. From start to finish, the reader experiences both the beauty and the danger of traveling the back roads and jungles through the eyes of the author. Through bouts of malaria, flesh-eating parasite attacks, gunfire, attempted robberies and more, we are right there with him. Experiencing the heartwarming stories and the daily trials and tribulations of several of the book's "characters" has a powerful effect on readers. The many challenges encountered by the average African family gives us a greater sense of appreciation for what the rest of us sometimes take for granted.
Kill Daddy is one of those rare books that will stay with you long after you've finished reading the last page. I've heard that the best way to deal with our problems is to help other people with theirs. I got a real sense that the author was able to begin to heal by helping those around him. Gerald Freeman definitely has a philosophical way of looking at the world, without ever sounding hokey or preachy. I'm happy that Gerald Freeman chose to travel through Africa in favor of committing murder! I'm now looking forward to his next book!
